Bench, Machine and Work Lights

If you find your work space to be poorly lit, a work light may be a good solution to ensuring your work is performed correctly. Whether for a machine or a bench, a work light can help keep you safe in whatever you are completing. There are many different and practical styles of work lights to fit your individualized needs.

What are the safety benefits of a work light?

Using a work light on your bench or machine every day can prevent unnecessary straining of your eyes when you perform tedious tasks that use small parts. In addition, a work light placed overhead can reduce shadows and therefore prevent you from missing something that is right in front of you. Trips and falls that cost companies and employees time and money are also easily preventable with proper lighting.

What styles of lights are available?

Depending on the type of work you are doing, there are many different styles of work lights to fit your needs. Portable work lights can be easily transferred to whatever area your project is in. Magnetic work lights can be placed overhead to provide clear visibility to the entire bench. Under cabinet work lights can be placed at a site that will remain stationary. There are also waterproof lights available for dark, greasy areas, such as a garage.

What features should you look for in a light?
  • Type of bulb: These models use various types of bulbs to light up your space. Each of them have their own specific features. There is LED, or light-emitting diode. There is also fluorescent, or CFL, and halogen bulb models available. Remember to use the correct type of bulb for your particular model of light.
  • Lumens: Lumens are an SI unit that measure the total quantity of visible light that a source emits. Lights are frequently labeled with their light output in lumens. For example, a standard LED bulb will be capable of producing about 470 lumens. It is important to take lumens into consideration when purchasing a work light, as different kinds of work require different visibility, and therefore, different numbers of lumens.
  • Use: Your desired use of your work light will determine what style of light you need. A work light's ability to be portable, number of lumens and LED capabilities will differ greatly, and these variables can all be taken into account when purchasing a light.
