Chevrolet Cobalt Fuel Pumps

Almost all contemporary cars use some variation of a fuel pump. These variations include pumps inside of the gas tank, outside of the gas tank, and two or more working in unison. With a wide selection of Chevrolet Cobalt fuel pumps, you can find the right replacement for your needs.

How does a fuel pump work?

Fuel pumps work by sending gas down a pipe from the gas tank to the carburetor. Once the gas has reached the carburetor, it is mixed with air in the fuel injection system and powers the engine. There are a few different types of fuel pumps:

  • Mechanical- This type relies on power from the engine to push fuel down the pipe and into the carburetor. Mechanical pumps are usually located inside the gas tank.
  • Electrical- Electrical fuel pumps use power from the cars battery to send gas down the pipe and into the carburetor. These parts are usually found mounted on the side of the gas tank.
  • Others- While mechanical and electrical are the normal pump systems found in most cars, some use two or more pumps that can be found inside or outside of the tank and can be powered mechanically or electronically.
How long until a fuel pump goes out?

A standard fuel pump that has been properly cared for can last anywhere from 100,000 miles to over 200,000 miles. There are a few things the driver can do to ensure a long life for their Cobalts fuel pump.

  • Keep the tank at least a quarter full- This accomplishes three things. It regulates the temperature of the gas tank, keeping the pump from overheating. It eases the workload of the part because of the weight of the gas pushing into the pipe. It also keeps impurities from clogging the part because grit and dirt settle at the bottom of the tank.
  • Fuel system maintenance- Replacing filters and keeping a tight seal on the gas cap will reduce the amount of stress and prolong the parts lifespan.
  • Fuel quality- Avoid using lower-grade gas. If you cannot afford to do this, only use gas from clean and well-maintained gas stations. This will reduce the amount of water and debris in the gas.
When should you replace a fuel pump?

There are a few signs that you may need a replacement:

  • Check engine light- The first and most obvious sign that you may need a replacement. Of course, this could be multiple things, but if your Chevrolet Cobalt is constantly running low or out of gas, it is probably time for a replacement.
  • Sputtering when driving- This is a sign that your engine is not getting enough gas and could mean you need a replacement.
  • Loss of power- If your Cobalt is losing a noticeable amount of power when driving, it could be a sign you need a replacement.
  • Change in your miles per gallon- Loss of fuel efficiency is usually a good indicator that it is time for a replacement.
