Fuel Pumps for Chevrolet P30

A fuel pump is an integral part of your Chevrolet P30’s fuel system. When the fuel pump functions up to standards, it helps you avoid serious engine problems or a breakdown on the road. With a wide selection of fuel pumps to choose from, you can find the correct one for your Chevy truck.

What kind of fuel pumps fit the Chevrolet P30?

Fuel pumps have come in a several styles over the years. There are three varieties that can be found in most Chevrolet vehicles still on the road.

  • Mechanical pumps: Mechanical fuel pumps are found on older models with carburetors. These pumps are mounted near the carburetor and are cranked by the engine’s crank shaft to create the suction to draw fuel from the gas tank and feed it to the carburetor.
  • Electric pumps mounted inline: Inline electric pumps are placed somewhere on the fuel line between the gas tank and the fuel injectors in your truck’s engine. Most often, they are mounted somewhere under the hood.
  • Electric pumps mounted on fuel tank: These pumps are mounted on top of the fuel tank and pump fuel directly from the tank and through a pressurized line to the fuel injectors. These are now standard in most contemporary vehicles.
What happens when a fuel pump begins to fail?
  • Engine fails to start: If the fuel pump fails to operate, your P30 will not start. This can happen when a fuel pump is jammed or loses its source of power.
  • Engine sputters: A fuel pump that is losing power will function okay at slower speeds but will be unable to supply enough fuel at highway speeds. The result will be sputtering and stalling. This can be a symptom of a clogged fuel pump or filter.
  • Engine surges: Another symptom of a failing fuel pump is surging when the gas pedal is pressed. This can be the result of a pump that is not supplying fuel consistently, sending too much at times and not enough at others. This causes the vehicle to rev unpredictably.
How intensive is replacing the fuel pump in a car?

Some fuel pumps are mounted on the gas tank of a vehicle. In these cases, if an access panel is not provided, it requires the gas tank to be emptied, removed, and reinstalled, which can be a lengthy process. The inline and mechanical types of fuel pumps are relatively easy to replace.
