How long are fuel pumps built to last?Fuel pumps are designed to last at least 50,000 miles, but can last up to 100,000 or more. If you’re noticing poor performance when starting or accelerating your car or truck, and it’s over 100,000 miles, you can check it by using a fuel pressure gauge. You hook the gauge to your fuel pump test point, and then have someone rev the engine while you check the pressure. Other signs that your pump might need to be replaced include:
- Your car stalling once it heats up.
- Sudden decrease in gas mileage.
- Surging forward without depressing the gas pedal.
Fuel pumps can fail with age and wear. There are things you can do to prevent early failure, though:
- Keep your gas tank at least a quarter full. If you have an electric fuel pump, the gas acts as a coolant, and running the tank too low can overheat it.
- Maintain your fuel system. Inspect it regularly and replace the filters as needed.
- Use good quality gas. Use the minimum grade or better that your car requires. Poor quality, contaminated gas will hurt multiple parts of your car.
