Ford Fuel Pumps

A fuel pump is an essential part of any vehicle. If your Ford is hesitating when it starts, or it jerks when you try to accelerate, it might be time to check your fuel pump. With a wide selection of Ford fuel pumps, you can find a fuel pump for your particular make and model.

What is a fuel pump?

A fuel pump feeds fuel to your Ford’s engine. Older vehicles may have a mechanical pump that sits outside the gas tank. Newer cars and trucks have an electric fuel pump that is located inside the fuel tank. The pump creates pressure that pushes fuel into the engine.

Where is the fuel pump located?

The location of the fuel pump depends on the age and model of your Ford. If it’s a mechanical pump, then it will be on the side of your engine. If it’s an electric fuel pump, it will be inside the fuel tank. Your vehicle’s service manual will tell you the exact location of your pump.

What kind of fuel pump do you need?.

The kind of pump you need depends on the model of your vehicle, and whether it requires a manual pump or an electric fuel pump. Your vehicle service manual can tell you the specific parts required and possibly even give you the part number.

How long are fuel pumps built to last?

Fuel pumps are designed to last at least 50,000 miles, but can last up to 100,000 or more. If you’re noticing poor performance when starting or accelerating your car or truck, and it’s over 100,000 miles, you can check it by using a fuel pressure gauge. You hook the gauge to your fuel pump test point, and then have someone rev the engine while you check the pressure. Other signs that your pump might need to be replaced include:

  • Your car stalling once it heats up.
  • Sudden decrease in gas mileage.
  • Surging forward without depressing the gas pedal.
What causes fuel pumps to fail?

Fuel pumps can fail with age and wear. There are things you can do to prevent early failure, though:

  • Keep your gas tank at least a quarter full. If you have an electric fuel pump, the gas acts as a coolant, and running the tank too low can overheat it.
  • Maintain your fuel system. Inspect it regularly and replace the filters as needed.
  • Use good quality gas. Use the minimum grade or better that your car requires. Poor quality, contaminated gas will hurt multiple parts of your car.
