Pistons, Rings, Rods, and Parts for Jeep

Piston rings and rods are considered mechanical seals and are devices that are designed for the sole purpose of joining the piston to the wall of the combustion chamber. Without sufficient sealing of the chamber, the engine will not maintain enough pressure to effectively move the pistons, which causes the vehicle to suffer from decreased power. Due to the fact that piston rings produce around 28 percent of an engines total friction, its crucial that the engine stays well lubricated at all times.

What are benefits of high-performance pistons in a Jeep?

In some cases, off-roading can put more strain on your 4X4 Jeep than the strain experienced by a car racing around a track. You may be asking yourself, "How could that be so when off-roading is usually done at relatively slow speeds?"

Though your 4X4 Jeep isnt breaking any speed records, its still hauling itself and you up steep inclines, over obstacle after obstacle, driving through bodies of water, struggling to free itself from mud, and if you have the suspension kit and tires for it, attempting to climb up, down, and through boulder-laden trails. Furthermore, its usually forced to do all of the above things in one day. This puts a lot of strain on the engine. In order to alleviate some of this strain, there are two reasons why forged (stamped) pistons are suggested, which are listed below:

  • The process of producing stamped pistons is different. Rather than pouring molten aluminum, various alloys, and silicon into a mold, manufacturers use state-of-the-art CNC machines to hammer out the components shape, allowing for the exact design specifications, and tolerances to remain unchanged in the final product. This process means stamped pistons are long-lasting, heat-resistant, and capable of withstanding high RPMs.
  • Though forged pistons are heavier than cast pistons, theyre able to compensate for this by providing a higher-than-average compression ratio in the chamber, translating to higher revolutions and more power.
What are some symptoms of bad piston rings?

Its difficult to tell the difference between bad piston rings and bad valve seals, since the symptoms they show are virtually identical. If your Jeep is doing any of the following, get your vehicle checked out immediately:

  • Gray or whitish smoke coming from the exhaust. This means oil is leaking into the combustion chamber and burning oil.
  • Engine oil is being consumed at an abnormal rate. This is yet another sign that the piston rings or valve seals are allowing oil to leak into the chamber.
  • Loss of accelerating power. Damaged piston rings or valve seals reduce engine compression, which is needed in order to produce and sustain the power of the engine.
What are some reasons you would need to rebore?

Reboring the cylinders of an engine is basically one of the simplest ways to either fix an engine with damaged cylinders or to gain a power boost from the enlargement of the cylinder so the piston can be replaced with a larger one. Reboring is also referred to as an engine rebuild.
