Boost Home Audio Power Amplifiers to Give Your Audio Setup

A home audio setup isn't complete without a capable amplifier that provides enough power so that your loudspeakers can reach their sonic potential. Picking the right amplifier requires much contemplation if you want to avoid any bottlenecking that will result in clipping or distortions in playing your source material.

What Is an Audio Power Amp?

  • Power: This is measured in watts. A common example of amplifier power ranges from 300 to 500 watts per channel. The more wattage per channel your amplifier can supply, the louder the sound is achieved by your loudspeaker. Impedance is another specification you need to take into account and relates to your speaker. It is measured in ohms and typically falls between 4 and 8 ohms. Any driver set hooked up to a power amp falling below the minimum impedance may result in instability and risk damaging your system.
  • Channels: An amp may either support mono or stereo channels. A mono channel amp can take just one driver setup, while a stereo amplifier can accommodate two or more drivers depending on the model. Two mono amps can be combined to achieve stereo sound and effectively doubles the output.
  • Class: Amplifiers increase the amplitude of a small signal to an interpretable level but still maintaining the signal's detail; this attribute is called linearity. Various classes of amps have emerged because of the changing performance requirements in modern audio applications. An example is a class A amp, which is small and the most linear type of audio amp. Class AB describes amps that offer higher signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and are ideal for Hi-Fi speaker drivers.

What Are Some Notable Carver Power Amplifier Models?

  • TFM-55x: This unit is rated for 4 or 8 ohms and can run 2-ohm driver at 600 watts. It is ideal for use with audiophile-grade music systems and can boost to 380 watts per channel. It has a 1440-watt magnetic field power supply with gain of 31 dB for flexible compatibility with many loudspeakers.
  • A-760x: This model is a two-channel unit rated at 380 watts per 8-ohm channel. It delivers high voltage or high current with its Magnified Current capabilities and can deliver rich sound with Carver Amazing Platinum Edition speakers. This amp is an improvement over its predecessor the TFM-55 series and can deliver more power into low impedances.
  • AV-405: This is a five-channel unit designed specifically for home theater surround sound systems. When used with a preamp or outboard processor, it delivers more output and flexibility than a single-unit receiver. It is capable of 410 watts of total output at 8-ohm loads and has enough reserves for reproducing peaks on digital soundtracks accurately.
