What to Consider When Looking for Home Speakers and Subwoofers 5.1 Systems

You may think you are at the cinema with the 5.1 line of home theater speakers from JBL. The home audio systems connect to any audio or video receiver and feature a minimalist black design and small footprint to blend seamlessly into most decors. Hardware is included for mounting the satellite speakers on a wall. Subwoofer and speaker cables are also included, along with a quick-start guide.

The satellite speakers are voice matched to ensure clear, consistent sound from all five woofers. A down-firing bass reflex enclosure and subwoofer provide a deep bass sound, whether viewing movies or music videos, and ensure that explosive scenes shake the floor. these home theater speakers are available in two system types: Cinema 510 and Cinema 610.

What Is a 5.1 Home Speaker System?

A 5.1 home audio system simply means that it is comprised of five satellite speakers and one subwoofer to produce an immersive, surround-sound audio experience. For comparison, a typical 2.1 stereo sound system would include two stereo speakers (one each for left and right audio) and one subwoofer.

With a full frequency range, home theater speakers produce quality sound for a truly immersive audio experience with ultra-low distortion.

What Are the Differences Between the Cinema 510 and Cinema 610?

  • The 510 has a 6.5-inch powered subwoofer and the 610 has an 8-inch powered subwoofer for optimal deep bass sounds.
  • The 610 includes a dedicated center speaker with a 150 Hz–20kHz frequency response for improved audio output.
  • The 510 has a 60W subwoofer, while the 610 has a 100W subwoofer.
  • The 510's system frequency range is 46Hz–20kHz, whereas the 610's is 38Hz – 20kHz for a full-range frequency response from bass to treble.

What Is a Subwoofer and Why Do You Need One?

  • A subwoofer reproduces low frequencies (i.e., bass), particularly in the bottom two octaves, from 20Hz to 80Hz.
  • Whereas a home theater system has multiple satellite stereo speakers, it typically has only one subwoofer. That's because the humans can identify the direction from which a sound is coming when the frequency is high, whereas low frequency bass sounds tend to travel in all directions.
  • Note, a subwoofer's actual performance has a lot to do with the acoustic properties of the room it is in, so a room's acoustics may need to be improved in order to reap the full benefits of a subwoofer.
  • For those looking to just add a subwoofer to their current home speaker system, JBL also offers three standalone, powered subwoofers: the Arena Sub 100P, Studio SUB 250P, and Studio SUB 260P.
