Choosing a New Camera Memory Card

A memory card is to a digital camera what film is to traditional cameras. With numerous compact flash card sizes and varieties from brands like Kodak, it is important to know how they differ from SD cards and what cameras they can go with.

What are Compact Flash Memory Cards?

Compact Flash (or CF) memory cards have been the most popular memory card type since the birth of digital cameras.

  • Speed options: You can find CF cards in different speed options, meaning the rate at which you can transfer pictures from it to your laptop or computer.
  • Write Acceleration Technology: Some cards have WA technology, which gives extra performance and speed. Not all cameras can support this technology however, and so will treat a CF card as standard even though it is labelled differently.
  • Type I or Type II: Compact flash cards come in two sizes, either type I or type II, and refers to their thickness. CF type I cards can go with cameras that have either a type I or type II slot, whereas a type II card can only fit in a type II slot.
  • Laptop adaptable: CF cards are different to SD cards, as the interface bases on PCMCIA (PC card). and use 50 pins instead of 68. A CF card can install onto your laptop using a pin adapter.
  • Smaller storage: SD cards that we have today have a huge amount of storage, but CF cards are much smaller. The biggest you will find is around 8 GB.

How Do I Take Out and Insert a CF Card?

Taking out your existing memory card and inserting a new one is a very simple process.

  • Taking out: On your camera you will need to find the card door and open it. Often the memory card sits next to the removable battery. Eject the card using the button and then carefully pull the card out.
  • Putting in: There is only one correct way for the CF to go into the camera, so make sure that you put it in the right way, then close the door.
