A Users Guide to Cut Film Holders for Large Format Cameras

Large format photographers take special care to keep their film holders clean and use the right type of film holder for their needs. Film holders not only hold cut film but protect it from light exposure.

What is a film holder?

A film holder holds cut films for insertion into a camera, a flatbed scanner, or a dedicated film scanner. Cut film holders for large format cameras are essential as they take the 4x5 and up format. You can use them for interchangeable medium and 135 film cameras, too. Film holders are slightly larger than the cut films they are constructed to hold. Materials commonly used to make film holders are wood and plastic. Some of the wooden film holders are handmade.

To use a film holder in large format cameras, first slide it into the camera and wait for the exposure to be made. Put the dark slide inside the film holder and remove the film holder from your camera to process the exposed film.

Can a film holder hold more than one sheet?

Some film holders are designed to hold a single piece of film. Others hold a sheet on each side. However, you can also find film holders that hold more than two cut films. These devices have whats called a dark slide that protects the cut films from light exposure. Some manufacturers color code the side of dark slides to make it obvious which side is exposed and which is unexposed film.

What types of film holders are available?

Large format cameras have a wide variety of film holders available. These include:

  • Film pack holders: Film pack holders contain 12 to 16 sheets of film. Some film pack holders have a paper tab that you pull to advance the film.
  • Rollfilm holders: Rollfilm holders provide sheet film cameras with rollfilm. They are mostly designed for large format cameras of 4x5.
  • Multi-sheet holders: Multi-sheet holders, as their name suggests, can hold more than two films. It depends on the manufacturer exactly how many fit.
How do you clean a film holder?

Its a good idea to clean film holders before loading large format film. Ideally, you should clean them before each photography session. Clean the work surface with a damp rag and vacuum it once it has dried. With the dark slide in place, vacuum the outside of the film holder. Then, remove the dark slide and vacuum the inside. You dont want any dust inside the holder. Vacuum under the loading flap, too. After youre done thoroughly vacuuming, you can reinsert the dark slide.
