What You Need to Know about 4GB DDR3-1333 Memory
DDR3 is the third generation of DDR, or double-data rate, technology. DDR is a method of increasing bandwidth or the total flow of data between the memory and the rest of the computer. eBay is your source for all reasonably priced 4GB DDR3-1333 memory modules.
When is it a good idea to buy more memory? There are a few reasons to buy additional memory cards. First, you may want to add more memory modules to your computer, assuming you still have enough free memory slots. Second, you may want to upgrade your RAM from a previous generation of DDR technology. DDR3 offers an advantage of improved bandwidth. It essentially has a data rate of eight times its core clock speed. DDR3-1333 is a specific type of DDR3 memory. It allows for a total bandwidth of slightly more than 10 gigabytes per second. This is a peak rate, however, and the actual rate may be somewhat lower depending on real-world conditions. A new or refurbished 4GB DDR3-1333 memory module may come as a single 4GB card or two 2GB cards, so check to see how many open slots you still have available in your computer's hard drive. Used cards that you purchase on eBay may have slight wear on them but are also much cheaper.
Are there different types of DDR3-1333 memory modules?Yes, the difference between DIMM and SO-DIMM modules is especially important. The other types are more specialized modules, but your memory options include:
- DIMM memory: This term refers to the size and the number of pins on the module itself. DDR3 DIMMs have 240 pins and are intended for desktop computers.
- SO-DIMM memory: This type has 204 pins and is designed for laptop, notebooks, and other small personal computers. Make sure the module will fit into your motherboard.
- ECC memory: ECC stands for error-correcting code. These modules are more reliable and are error-free, but they come at the expense of an extra data lane. ECC is intended more toward highly specialized applications that can't tolerate many errors.
- Buffered memory: Systems with lots of memory modules may become slightly unstable. Buffered memory fixes this problem by boosting the integrity of the signal at the cost of a slight delay in performance. Servers may benefit from buffered memory, but it may also need a specialized motherboard to work properly.
If you're inserting multiple memory modules into a single motherboard, then there's a general rule to follow. Different types of DDR3 modules are compatible with each other. For example, you can combine DDR-1333 and DDR-1600, but this pairing may only operate at the transfer speed of the slower module.
