Microsoft originally designed Windows NT as a more stable, business-oriented family of operating systems to complement Windows 95 and Windows 98. However, the Windows NT family ultimately expanded to become Microsoft's general-purpose line of operating systems.

Although "NT" carries no specific meaning; it was commonly thought in the IT industry to mean "New Technology." Since 2000, Microsoft has based all subsequent forms of Windows products on the NT family, including Windows XP, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016.

Microsoft designed the NT 4.0 family to run multiprocessing, 32-bit hardware architecture as a complement to their consumer-oriented operating systems. More stable than Windows 95, Microsoft marketed Windows NT 4.0 for business client use on workstations and network servers. While the company intended for the NT line to serve business clients' needs, it ultimately expanded to become a general-purpose line of software.

Microsoft released seven Service Pack updates to Windows NT 4.0, beginning with Service Pack 1, or SP1. Service Pack 6a , or SP6a, provides the latest service pack update. However, most versions of the OS ship with Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 4. You will need to upgrade to Service Pack 6a.

Clients and businesses can choose from three versions of Windows, including three versions of Microsoft Windows NT Server, depending on their specific needs:

• Windows NT 4.0 Workstation — Designed for general-purpose business computing on a desktop workstation, it contained the first release of TAPI on Windows NT.
• Windows NT Server, including the enhanced Enterprise Edition — This OS is designed for high-traffic networks and was responsible for the creation of the NTFS file system.
• Terminal Server Edition — An NT server designed for remote access, it was the first Windows OS to allow this feature.
• Windows NTe — This embedded Windows OS was designed for the non-general hardware found in vending machines and ATMs. It includes many features to choose from.

This operating system is available for purchase on CD-ROM or a set of three 3.5-inch floppy disks. Users can install it and use it to run legacy programs. Computer science students will find an excellent learning opportunity in configuration of Microsoft Windows NT Server to run a basic web server as well. The OS provides an additional opportunity to learn about legacy interfaces, folders, and files systems.
