Take Better Pictures with a Nikon 55mm Camera Lens Hood

Nikon, an international corporation based in Japan, has been making cameras and other devices for more than 100 years. They offer a variety of different lens hoods to fit your Nikon 55mm camera, many of which have a three-lug bayonet mount. You can find the right part to fit your camera lens, including fitment options related to how you would like your lens hood to twist, snap, screw, or slip onto your lens.

What is a lens hood?

It is a ring or tube, often made of hard plastic, that you attach to the lens on your camera. Its primary use is to prevent unwanted light from contaminating your photos, but it also protects your lens from scratches and fingerprints. Using one acts as a filter and creates more contrast in the tone and color of your photos and stops lens flare. It also protects from impact and damage over and above a protective filter.

When is it necessary to use a lens hood?

You should use one all of the time even when you are inside or it is night time. Exceptions to this rule include any time you want to create lens flare or when you use the flash on your Nikon camera. The hood will block the flash and create a shadow at the bottom of your image.

What types of Nikon lens hoods are there?

Nikon lens hoods come in two main types:

  • Petal lens hoods: Petal hoods are used on standard zoom lenses that go to wider angles. An example of a petal hood is the HB-69 Hood for a Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR II Lens D3100/D5000 or the HB-37 Bayonet Lens Hood For Nikon 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR - e141.
  • Cylindrical lens hoods: Cylinder-shaped hoods are used on fixed focal range or prime lenses that have no zoom capability. An example of a circular lens is the Nikon Hb-45 Bayonet Lens Hood for 18-55mm VR G DX Af-s.
How do you choose the right lens hood for a Nikon camera?

Lens hoods are not one-size-fits-all items. Always ensure that your lens hood fits before trying to use it. You need to find the part for your particular lens. Different cameras have different size lenses, so they need different hoods. The circumference of each front lens is different, so the cut-out parts of the hood need to be different based on the width of the angle of view.
