The Modern Style of the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 116710BLNR
Rolex has several long-lasting lines dating back several decades. One of the most recognizable is the GMT-Master II. The original GMT-Master hit the scene in 1954, with the second generation debuting in 1982. The Rolex GMT-Master II collection is going strong today, and the Ref 116710BLNR, commonly known as "Batman," is an example of how the Swiss watchmaker stays true to its heritage while continuing to innovate.
This Rolex stainless-steel watch was in production between 2007 and 2019. Upon launch, the Ref 116710 introduced several unique features now standard throughout Rolex's collection.
The Super Case and Maxi Dial
The Super case is one of the most notable changes to the Ref 116710BLNR compared to its predecessor. The Ref 116710BLNR isn't the first watch with the new Super case, but the model helped bring it to the masses. The watch maintains the standard 40-millimeter case diameter. However, Rolex refined the shape in many ways.
Super cases have a chunkier build. They're thicker, and they feature subtle squared-off touches. The lugs are fatter, and the crown guards are almost twice as wide.
Another unique feature that the Ref 116710BLNR helped usher in is the Maxi dial. Maxi dials are all about improving legibility. Compare them to older dials; you'll notice that they have larger index markers and broader hands. The dial still has the same lumes, but they're bigger and more visible.
Older GMT-Master models typically had a red 24-hour hand. However, the "Batman" employs a blue color. The same color appears on the bottom half of the bezel.
The Cerachrom Bezel
This Rolex stainless-steel watch introduced a brand-new bezel insert. In the past, Rolex GMT-Master II references had the same aluminum insert as other Rolex watches. But with the Ref 116710, Cerachrom became standard. Cerachrom is Rolex's proprietary ceramic. It's more resistant to scratches and less likely to fade with considerable sun exposure.
The bezel on the Ref 116710BLNR is both black and blue to match the dial and the 24-hour hand respectively. It also features a 24-hour scale.
Other Key Features
Keeping the dial protected is flat sapphire crystal. There's a small Cyclops magnifying lens over the date window as well.
Beyond the aesthetic changes, Rolex upgraded this watch's construction. Previous Rolex GMT-Master watches had a Twinlock crown. With the launch of the Ref 116710, the line received the Triplock crown of some of Rolex's diving watches. The new feature helps improve water resistance. It keeps the movement safe from damage to depths of 100 meters.
Inside the case is a new Caliber 3186 movement. It's similar to the movement it replaced, but Rolex improved the jump-hour mechanism and finally replaced the Nivarox hairspring. In older models, the hairspring was the only component not made in-house by Rolex. The Ref 11670 saw the switch to a new blue Parachrom hairspring that Rolex produces.
The hairspring is antimagnetic and doesn't experience issues when put through temperature changes. As a result, it's more reliable and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks.
