Choosing Radio Transceivers

It can be frustrating when you want to listen to your favorite show, and all you get is distorted sound. Whats worse is the number of channels you have access to. When this happens, you know you need to get a transceiver to solve this problem.

What does my Ten-Tec system do for me?

Your Ten-Tec device has both a transmitter and a receiver incorporated within the same circuit or housing. This means that it serves two functions:

  • Transmitter - This electronic device produces radio waves using an antenna.
  • Receiver - Your TenTec device captures the radio waves using an antenna and processes those waves to only extract those that vibrate at the right frequency.

Until the early 1920s, radios carried separate units of transmitters and receivers. Today, amateur radio users, also referred to as ham radio operators, now build units that have both.

What features should I look for in my Ten-Tec?

Buying a Ten-Tec may seem like a pick, plug, and play plan. However, there are some features you need to look out for to make the right selection, especially when buying a pre-owned device. Lets look at some of them:

  • Performance - Whether brand new or refurbished, the performance of your device is a critical factor. A good system should be able to work in any location.
  • Power output - It is important to understand the output your Tec requires vis a vis the amount of power output your country offers. For an average HF system, a power output of about 100 watts peak envelope can be considered normal. Other counties vary and can go as high as 400 watts.
  • Software linking - Amateur radios have become digital over time, and this may be a key area of consideration. With that, check that your device supports software linking.
  • Amplifier - This comes in handy when you intend to boost the sound quality and emit sound within a large area. Should you opt to amplify sound, your transmitting and receiving system needs to accommodate this feature. While some new brands may come with it as an added device, refurbished ones may require you to check for compatibility.
  • Size and space - Look at the space where you intend to place your Ten-Tec and have this consideration in mind when purchasing it. It could be your car, office or home and your space could either be compact or free of choice.

What types of transceivers are on the market today?

Your choice of the device relies heavily on its intended use. Lets mention a few that you can check out :

  • Portable and mobile systems
  • Base unit (fixed desktop systems)
  • Software-defined, SDR technology)
  • Kit building
