All About Toner Refill Kits for HP Printers

A toner refill for your HP printer can save the day. Imagine when you are printing out a big project and your toner runs dry. Running to the store or ordering one online may take more time than you have, but when you keep a toner refill kit on hand, you will be back in business in a matter of minutes when you refill your cartridge.

What types of HP printers use toner cartridges?

HP makes countless models of LaserJet laser printers; some are for home use, and others are for business use because they can print a larger volume. Regardless of the exact model, all HP LaserJets use laser toner, which is located inside a cartridge in the printer.

What comes in a toner refill kit?

The contents of a toner refill kit vary based on the type of printer. Color LaserJet printers have four colors: cyan, magenta, black, and yellow. A refill kit includes laser toner powder in each of these colors. Each container of toner powder comes with a squeeze top or funnel to help you avoid a mess during the refill process. Some kits, designed for black and white LaserJets, only have black toner powder. Many refill kits also include rubber gloves and a burn tool to create a fill hole if one isn't already there. Often, aluminum tape is included as a way to cover a fill hole that you had to burn. Some printer cartridges have smart chips that must be replaced when they have been used beyond their life, so some kits also include a replacement chip.

How do you refill your toner cartridge?

Here are the steps to refill your toner:

  • Step 1 - Toner is messy, so prepare a workspace with newspaper or paper towels for the refill process. You may even consider doing this task outside. Remove the cartridge from the printer.
  • Step 2 - Look for the fill hole and remove the cover. Some cartridges do not have fill holes, so you will need to make one.
  • Step 3 - Refill the cartridge with the correct color of toner powder.
  • Step 4 - Put the cover back on the fill hole. In the case that you made the fill hole yourself, cover it with aluminum tape after you refill the powder. Gently shake the cartridge from side to side so the laser toner powder is evenly distributed.
  • Step 5 - Now that your refill is complete, you need to change the smart chip on your cartridge if it has one, and then, return the cartridge to your printer.
