USA Trains G Scale Model Locomotives

Model railroads are not just a hobby but an experience you can share with the entire family and pass down to future generations. USA Trains are a wonderful way to celebrate this tradition and create scale models that are true to life. The U.S.A. Trains brand offers train sets, individual model trains, locomotive tracks, and parts all in the G scale.

What is USA Trains?

The Charles Ro Supply Company is the biggest train store in the United States and the country’s biggest Lionel dealer. This family owned and operated business began manufacturing its own G scale trains and parts in 1982 when Lionel paused manufacturing for 9 months. These model trains and train sets were a huge success and soon became a fixture of the business. In 1987, Charles Ro established USA Trains, changed the name of his company, and placed a greater emphasis on his branded trains, tracks, and parts. The brand’s primary products are the:

  • Ultimate Series at 1:29 scale
  • American Series at 1:24 scale
  • Work Trains Series at 1:24 scale
Does USA Trains only make G scale?

Yes. When Lionel moved to Mexico and paused manufacturing, Ro began selling German-made locomotives that were made on a larger scale than what Lionel manufactured. These G scale trains were a big hit, and Ro began manufacturing them himself because he recognized the lack of competition. The USA Trains brand has focused almost exclusively on G scale ever since.

What is G scale?

G scale, which is also referred to as G gauge, is the scale on which the locomotives, tracks, and other parts are modeled. Scale represents the ratio between the model and the subject in the real world. G scale trains are larger and more durable than traditional model trains. Although this scale is quite suitable for indoor use and often used as such, it’s appropriate for outdoor use as well. That’s why G scale model trains are often closely associated with garden railways.

What’s the difference between G gauge and scale?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but the meanings are different. Gauge measures the distance between the rails. G gauge was established by LGB tracks. G scale includes any size that fits on G gauge. Notice that USA Trains makes both 1:24 and 1:29.

Why does scale matter?

If you’re purchasing a locomotive train set that you never intend to expand, then scale doesn’t matter per se. You can simply purchase whatever size you prefer and have space for. Trains, however, tend to be a hobby you add to and work on over an extended time. Scale thus matters because it ensures that the USA Trains products you purchase will fit. Scale applies to:

  • Train sets
  • Individual trains
  • Track sets
  • Individual track pieces
  • Replacement parts
  • Scenery pieces and kits
