Women's Angora Sweaters

Women's angora sweaters are known for their fuzzy factor. Most are made with short sleeves and a rounded neck, but many other styles are available. Though angora is a warm fiber, many luxury long- and short-sleeve sweaters and pullovers are made from a knit combination of angora, cashmere wool, or mohair, which is closest to the look of angora sweaters.

What is an angora sweater?

Made from fibers from rabbits, angora is an incredibly soft material to wear next to the skin. Women's sweaters made from this material were one of the top fashion trends in the 1940s and 1950s and were worn with pencil skirts. A black angora sweater with a classic pearl necklace was in fashion, and a white angora sweater made with short sleeves and a rounded neck was also common.

How should you care for angora sweaters?

It is important to care for your angora sweater, cardigan, turtleneck, or pullover so that it remains fuzzy and lasts for a long time. Just like a rabbit, angora will shed. Prevent this problem before you wear it by folding your sweater and placing it into a large Ziploc freezer bag. Leave the bag in your freezer for up to 4 hours. Remove the sweater and wear. You can do the same whether it is pure angora, a combination wool angora knit, a black, a white, or a colored sweater. Freezing will not affect the size.

How should you wash your angora sweater?

Wash the sweater only when it smells or if it has dirt on it. Washing too much wears out the fibers. Simply hand-wash in warm water and natural liquid soap. Rinse the soap out but avoid pulling or twisting the sweater to allow it to maintain its size. Add a bit of salt to the water to prevent the color from running even if it is black. Lay it flat on a towel with sleeves lying at the side to keep its shape and allow it to air dry out of direct sun. Do not put it in the washer or dryer.

How should you properly store angora sweaters?

Contrary to what you may think, do not store in an airtight bag. Store your angora sweater in a well-ventilated place. Place it on a shelf in your closet with cedar chips to prevent pests. Never hang your sweater whether it is made from angora, wool, cashmere, or any knitted blend. Hanging will inevitably cause it to lose its size and shape and often damages the collar and sleeves.
