Know Where You're Going with an Xtrons 2-DIN Video In-Dash Unit with GPS

When you're driving to a place you've never been, it can be helpful to have a GPS for navigation. Putting one right into your car's dash can make this convenient. Xtrons makes a number of video in-dash devices with GPS that are the 2-DIN or double-DIN size.

What are some features of an in-dash unit?

These double-DIN, in-dash products have several functions. First, GPS navigation can help you locate places of interest, give you step-by-step directions to addresses, and track your movement as you travel. An advantage of GPS over cellular data is that you can be anywhere, including areas without cell towers, and still get a signal.

Depending on the model, an Xtrons unit may also have:

  • Digital radio reception: Many are ready to accept analog as well as digital signals. Digital signals usually have less interference.
  • Bluetooth: With Bluetooth technology activated, you can have your smartphone or tablet linked to your in-dash system. Texts and phone calls can come through your device, and you'll be able to access your downloaded music.
  • Wi-Fi: Using Wi-Fi can let you browse the web or download information to your unit.
  • Steering wheel control: Once an in-dash device is installed, you can use controls on your car's steering wheel (if available) so that you can maintain control of your vehicle while changing songs or adjusting the volume.
  • Vehicle monitoring: If you have an OBD2 system for diagnostics on your car, you can access data through your in-dash system. You'll be able to be notified when tire pressure is low, and when there's a trouble code, you can find out more information.
  • Adjustable screen angle: Some products come with a screen that you can adjust to optimize your viewing angle.
Can these units be used to play DVDs?

Some double-DIN models come with a DVD player built in. In this case, the disc reader would be located behind the screen. Other versions may not have a DVD player included, but they can be hooked up to one via HDMI cables. If you do not have a player or HDMI input on your double-DIN model, you may be able to mirror your smartphone through a USB cord. If you're able to stream or play a downloaded movie on your phone, you can then show it on your in-dash unit. The audio would come through your car's speakers, giving you more of a surround-sound feel than if you were to use a phone or tablet by itself.

How much memory do these devices have?

Specifications vary from model to model. You could have 1GB or 2GB RAM DDR3, for example, which could be expanded with the use of a memory card.
